Ans :

Introduction-

Komagata Maru was a Japanese ship that travelled from Hong Kong to Vancouver in 1914, carrying 376 economic migrants mostly from Punjab state of India. Canadian authorities did not allow Indians to enter in Vancouver. Even Indians stayed in Ship itself and waited for two months. Still Canadian authorities didn’t show any sympathy. Then they forcibly sent back the ship to India. On return British suspected them as Ghadar party revolutionaries. Some of those immigrants were killed or jailed when upon entering the India.

Reason-

At that time many Asians were entering to Canada for better livelihood purposes. To prevent the entry of persons of Asian origin to Canada, Canada has passed Asian Exclusion act in 1908 with the approval of the British Government and restricted the entry of Asian origins into Canada. Because of this act, Canadian authorities denied the entry of Indians into Vancouver.

Criticism on Canada’s act-

This was one of several incidents in the history of early 20th century involving exclusion laws in both Canada and the United States designed to keep out immigrants of Asian origin. The Komagata Maru episode attracted worldwide attention and condemnation. This act was called as racist my many and blamed it for violation of human rights, which was aimed at exclusion of Asian immigrants.

Apology from Canadian Government-

  • In 2008 by the Prime Minister Stephen Harper of Canada after 94 years issued apology on the incident.

  • In a goodwill gesture, in 2014 the people of Canada marked the centenary of Komagata Maru incident in a solemn ceremony.

  • Again recently the incumbent Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau delivered a formal apology in his country’s House of Commons for Komagata Maru incident and called it as a great injustice.

Conclusion-

Komagata Maru incident was a very significant event in the history of Indian revolutionary movement. This was the voyage of Komagata Maru, which though inspired by the doctrine of the Ghadar party indirectly gave a fillip to the Indian struggle for freedom.
