Q. Jharkhand coal mine collapse: Comment on recent coal mine collapse in Jharkhand.
Jan 05, 2017 Related to : GS Paper-3

Ans :

Introduction-

An open coal mine at Paharia Bhodaye in Jharkhand’s Godda district has been collapsed, which left 17 miners dead and many insured. Coal mining in India is one of the most dangerous professions and it has highest rates of fatalities and injuries from the collapse of roofs and walls. Hence there is a need to ensure coal mining safety measures.

Issues-

  • Outsourcing of mining operations to private companies, which do not undertake safety measures and unchecked illegal mining are main reasons behind such disasters.
  • In many areas rampant illegal mining is being carried out in connivance with local leaders, contractors and officials ignoring the risk factor.
  • India also has unusually high incidents of accidents caused by the surface movement of heavy machinery, i.e. not even a consequence of actual mining activity, it indicates a clear sign of administrative failings.

Solutions-

  • Government has already called for a nationwide safety survey for the country’s coal mines. It must ensure proper and strict safety measure in the area of coal mining.
  • There is need to invest huge capital in ensuring safety measures and also adopting high technology in mining activities.
  • Administration on mining must be reformed and an effective safety regulator must audit safety measures in various mines frequently.

Conclusion-

The disaster like the above is almost human made due lack of precautionary and safety measures. The blame must be shared by all the parties involved including administration. In coming days government ensure the proper safety measures in all mining activities, so that such disasters won’t repeat again.
