Introduction-

Background-

In 2003 a US-led coalition forces invaded Iraq and toppled the autocratic regime of Saddam Hussein. UK has supported and actively involved in the military action against Saddam Hussein. But many political leaders including from then ruling government raised question on UK’s involvement in Iraq war. In this background enquiry commission has been formed.

Key features of report-

  • Then UK Government chose to join the invasion of Iraq before peaceful options for disarmament had been exhausted and military action at that time was not a last resort.
  • Britain’s policy was based on flawed intelligence which was not challenged then and intelligence inputs that had not established beyond doubt. Hence UK’s judgment about the severity of the threat posed by Iraq was presented with a certainty that was not justified.
  • There was no imminent threat from the Saddam Hussein and with a majority of the United Nations Security Council supporting UN inspections and monitoring, Hence UK's decision to act despite no second UN resolution undermined the Security Council's authority.
  • Planning and preparations for the post-Saddam period were wholly inadequate, and The U.K. government failed to achieve the stated objectives it had set itself in Iraq. It resulted into terrorism in Iraq.

Why the Chilcot report is vital?

  • By joining US lead invasion in Iraq, UK has lost more than 200 its soldiers and citizens also tens of thousands of Iraqis also lost their life and more than million Iraqis were displaced.
  • As a consequence of this controversial invasion we are witnessing brutal sectarian wars in and around Iraq. Brutal wars gives rise to Islamic State, which has killed many people in those areas and now it became global threat.
  • In this background this report became more vital to rectify the error committed during Iraq invasion and it can act as guide for such possible adventures.

Conclusion-

Enquiry commission throws the light on wrong decisions took by US lead forces including United Kingdom. Report of enquiry commission may act as guide to possible feature adventures.
