Ans :

The 2016 Olympics games were held in Rio de janeiro, Brazil in the month of August. Olympics is a major international multi-sport event, this year 11,000 athletes were participated from countries across the world. The United States topped the medal table for the fifth time in the past six Summer Olympics, winning the most golds (46) and most medals overall (121).

India’s performance-

Out of a 119-strong contingent, Indian athletes bagged only two medals in Rio Olympics. In Badminton P V Sindhu got Silver medal and Sakshi Malik bagged Bronze medal in freestyle wrestling. Though Indian athletes did well, but overall performance is disappointed, hence Indian sports needs to be reorganized. Now it is important we delve into what should be the way forward for Indian sport.

What needs to be done?

  • Government and private agencies must join the hands and pick up existing athletes and provide them with better training and coaching a couple of years ahead of the Olympics.
  • Indian athletes are already well established, but they need better facilities and training to enhance their existing potential. Hence better facilities and training must be provided.
  • There is need of proactive approach to harness potential that is already well developed. Many sports did not get adequate fund, hence all sports must get required funds.
  • In short term, the government to identify a couple of sports with little tradition in the country at the moment and invest in them long term.
  • In long term, Government must develop world class training centres for all sports with all required facilities and trainers.
  • Consistent time, energy and money spent on developing potential at the grass root level are certain to yield dividends long term. Hence government must focus on these aspects.

Recently government has formed task force for the next three editions of the Games a step in the right direction. Even though having huge talent pool, our performances in sports are not up to the mark, hence this issue needs to addressed. Government with its short term as well as long term plan, it must reorganise Indian sports. Task force needs to be consistent and it should provide all required facilities to enhance potential of our athletes.
