Ans :

The MTCR (Missile Technology Control Regime) is an informal and voluntary partnership among 34 countries to prevent the proliferation of missile and unmanned aerial vehicle technology capable of carrying a 500 kg payload for at least 300 km.

In news-

Recently countries belonging to the 34-member Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) agreed and raised no objection to India’s membership, with this India will soon join missile treaty club. Now India’s membership is confirmed, with only formalities and protocol needs to be completed.

Its importance-

  • Admission to the MTCR would open the way for India to buy high-end missile technology. India can export high-tech missiles and purchase hardware like Predator drones. With this India and the US are expected to fast-track discussion on sale of predator series of unmanned aircraft for the Indian military.

  • India’s entry into MTCR group will shape the future of India’s engagement with not just the MTCR but also the broader global non-proliferation community. Entry into the MTCR is a step closer to India’s Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) membership.

  • Membership of the rules-based MTCR would require to comply with rules to sell missile. With MTCR membership India is set to discuss the possible sale of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles to Vietnam. It will be diplomatic win over China.

Entry into MTCR regime will be one of the greatest diplomatic boost to India. It will also enhance the level of understanding between MTCR member nations and India, and also it allows India to import technologies for peaceful purposes. Now India is hopeful that its MTCR entry will enable it to be a member of the nuclear suppliers group subsequently despite China's reservations.
