Q. India Afghanistan Relations: Comment on recent developments between India and Afghanistan relation.

Traditionally there has been strong and friendly ties between India and Afghanistan, though it saw some ups and downs in 1980’s and 1990’s. India aided Afghanistan on several fronts including of overthrowing the Taliban, extending humanitarian help etc. India is working on various projects in Afghanistan as part of its reconstruction efforts, which was devastated due to war with Taliban.

In news-

Today Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi along with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani jointly inaugurated the Afghan-India Friendship Dam (Salma Dam) which was built with Indian aid.

Recent developments-

  • In December Indian PM has inaugurated Afghan Parliament, which has been constructed by India at a cost of about $90 million, as a sign of friendship.

  • Last month India has signed with Iranian and Afghan Presidents in Tehran, under which India will finance the development of Iran’s Chabahar port, which will be linked to Afghan road networks.

  • Again today, India PM inaugurated friendship dam (Salma dam), which has been built with Indian aid in Herat province of Afghanistan. The 42 MW dam, with an investment of over $275 million, will boost the agricultural and industrial sectors of Afghanistan.

  • India, also signed the TAPI pipeline project that aims to bring natural gas from Turkmenistan through Afghanistan and Pakistan to India. TAPI pipeline will attract investment and help stabilise Afghan’s faltering economy.

  • India also undertaking about 200 small developmental projects in war hit Afghanistan. These projects demonstrate the India’s commitments towards reconstruction of Afghanistan.

Why Afghanistan is important for India?

  • India is one of the closest regional powers that has invested in institution and infrastructure building in Afghanistan. A peaceful and prosperous Afghanistan is must for regional safety and security and is also vital for India’s regional ambitions.

  • For India, Afghanistan has immense strategic potential. A friendly, stable regime in Afghanistan is geopolitical insurance against Pakistan’s deep state. Both countries share concerns about Pakistan’s policy towards terrorism.

  • Afghanistan is currently going through a particularly turbulent transition. Afghan government is trying hard to contain the terror activities of Taliban. Both India and Afghanistan are openly targeting Pakistan for supporting the Taliban.


India is playing bigger role in reconstructing process of war hit Afghanistan. Stability of Afghan is vital for regional safety and India’s regional ambitions. Traditionally people of Afghanistan counts India and its people as a well-meaning friend and with India’s deepening engagement in the post-Taliban Afghanistan through economic reconstruction will take relation to new height. Recent developments have marked major success in India and Afghanistan relation.
