Oct 06, 2016 Related to : GS Paper-3

Ans :

Introduction-

Currently most of the Indian cities are facing issues of heavy air pollution. Despite having increased awareness among policymakers and rising public concern about air pollution, many Indian cities continue to be among the most lethally polluted metropolises in the world.

Issues related Air Pollution-

  • In a recent time air pollution has emerged as the largest environment risk factor. According WHO, it is responsible for the three million deaths worldwide.
  • In India, WHO study suggest that air pollution resulted in a three-year reduction in the lifespan of 660 million people.
  • Rising level of air pollutants not only damage health of human being but also contribute to global warming.

What needs to be done?

  • There is an urgent need of effective policy measures and regulatory interventions to contain growing air pollution. Hence clean air must be made an effective component of Swatch Bharat Mission.
  • Currently there is an absence of robust data about air pollution and which in turn hampering the efforts to improve air quality. Hence India must strengthen its capacity and must standardise its methods to monitor air quality effectively.
  • India must develop and use reliable and good quality instruments to curb the growing air pollution.
  • Pollution control boards need to put in place a system of regular checks to identify and monitor sources of pollution. It would help assess the impact of existing interventions.
  • There is a need to invest in research on the impact and health burden of different kinds of pollutants, to improve the efficacy of policy measures.
  • We need to indentify various measures like denser urbanisation to minimise commutes and better public transport to energy efficiency and clean fuels etc.

Conclusion-

The rate of growth of air pollution in India is alarmingly high. Air pollution has maximum contribution in total pollution that India is currently facing. It has huge impact on both human life as well as environment. Hence there is an urgent need to look at the issue very seriously and address the issue more effectively.
