Q. Importance of LNG: Discuss the importance of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the context of India.
Feb 18, 2017 Related to : GS Paper-3

Ans :

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is natural gas (predominantly methane, CH4) that has been converted to liquid form for ease of storage or transport. It takes up about 1/600th the volume of natural gas in the gaseous state. It is odourless, colourless, non-toxic and non-corrosive.

Utilisation in India-

  • At present the India’s capacity of LNG import terminals nationally is about 16.5 mmtpa, while those under construction add up to thrice as much.
  • Nation-wide gas pipeline network is set to increase by 11,000 km from just over 16,000 km, which would increase the total capacity of LNG import in India.
  • As many as ten gas liquefaction trains are expected to come on stream in North America and Australia, which would rev up LNG supply to the Asian including Indian markets.

Importance in the context of India-

  • The estimate is that anticipated demand for natural gas for 2016-17 is about 350 mmscmd and is projected to go up to 490 mms cmd in 2021-22, with usage for power being by far the single biggest demand.
  • It is entirely possible that LNG imports double and even treble over the next decade and it would make strategic sense to better allocate more resources for LNG infrastructure including shipping for better utilisation of LNG and to reduce the overall costs of energy sourcing and logistics.
  • Natural gas being the cleanest fossil fuel among available fuels, hence to fulfil its energy demand India must gear up to utilise a flood of new liquefied natural gas.

Way ahead-

  • To utilise the LNG effectively, India needs to build up required infrastructure like shipping, storage, pipe-line etc. Hence Government must construct required infrastructure.
  • Usage of natural gas requires power utilities are in a position to adopt promising thermal power-generation technologies like Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle. India needs to develop such aspects.

India is developing country and energy is most important aspect for development. LNG is not only clean energy and its availability and supply are also better condition. Hence India must utilise this clean energy, for that it needs to gear up to prepare required infrastructure requirement.
