Feb 17, 2017 Related to : GS Paper-3

Ans :

Recently Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has scripted new chapter in the history of space exploration with the successful launch of a record 104 satellites by its Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) in a single mission. PSLV-C37 carrying the 104 satellites lifted off from the first launch pad at Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.

Its importance-

  • Out of the total 104 satellites placed in orbit, 101 satellites belonged to six foreign countries. They included 96 from the US and one each from Israel, the UAE, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Kazakhstan.
  • The number of satellites launched is more than three times the previous record for simultaneous launches, set by Russia in 2014, the combined weight of the satellites was a mere 1.3 tonnes.

  • In last one decade ISRO’s has achieved spectacular success in its various space mission and India’s space programme has been spectacularly low-cost.
  • With this launch ISRO has created world record by launching highest number of satellites, till now Russia held the record of launching 37 satellites in a single mission, in 2014.
  • According to ISRO, the recent launch is not meant to set world record, but as an opportunity to make full use of the capacity of the launch vehicle.
  • The launch is particularly significant as ISRO now cements its position as a key player in the lucrative commercial space launch market by providing a cheaper yet highly reliable alternative.

Since last one decade ISRO has made various achievements, with recent launch of recent 104 satellites has created world record. ISRO achieved many milestones at low cost, and with reliable quality service. In this background ISRO emerged as key player among space missions in the global market.
