Q. Human tragedy in Syria: In the backdrop of civil war in Syria, discuss the ongoing human tragedy in Syria.

Introduction-

Since 2011 Syria is witnessing civil war, which was started with pro-democracy protests in March 2011. Since then tens of thousands Syrian people has been killed and many lakhs were displaced. Later years Islamic State has got the hold over most of the Syria and atrocity and killing of people have increased manifold. According to some estimates about 4 lack Syrians have lost their lives in five-and-a-half years of armed conflict.

Human Tragedy in Syria-

According to the United Nation’s Special Envoy to Syria, around 400,000 people have been killed in the civil war over the past five and a half years. Also more than millions Syrian people have been displaced. The ongoing conditions in Syria have created one of the worst refugee crises since the Second World War.

Analysis-

  • Ongoing human tragedy in Syria has displayed complete disregard for human life by almost all the actors of the Syrian civil war is impossible to comprehend.
  • Government forces as well as Terror group Islamic State fighters are recklessly employing mass killing of Syrian people. Bombing has been seen in Syria on daily basis.
  • World’s largest military powers like USA, Russia are also not keen in solving these ongoing on slaughter in Syria.
  • Multiple rebel fractions backed by regional powers, are competing with the regime in brutality.
  • All of them including Government have to share the blame for turning a pluralist country of 23 million people, relatively stable and peaceful till six years ago, into the largest zone of human suffering.

Reasons-

  • Failure of diplomatic intervention in the early years of civil war has helped to Islamic State to grow further.
  • Syrian regime was not receptive to voices of dissent, instead of peaceful talks it used security forces against protestors.
  • Similarly Syrian rivals in West Asia have exploited the conflict situation, which led to growth of terrorism in Syria.

Conclusion-

The present situation in Syria is worse than the Second World War tragedy. It exposed the brutality of regime as well as Islamic state and also miserable failure of the international system to intervene.  Now it seems situation is totally out of control. Hence Syria needs an immediate ceasefire between the regime and the rebels, followed by constructive talks backed by regional and global powers.
