Oct 20, 2016 Related to : GS Paper-2

Ans :

Introduction-

Currently the Iraq is witnessing deadly military actions between coalition of international forces and Iraqi army against barbaric terrorist group Islamic state. Though IS was controlled important cities of Iraq once, but now it is losing its control.

Background-

  • In the June 2014, the Islamic state under the leadership of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi has declared caliphate by capturing city Mosul, the second largest city of Iraq.
  • Similarly IS has gained control over Tikrit, Fallujah and other cities.
  • By controlling most parts of Iraq it has established territorial control and ran an administration that qualitatively separated it from other radical jihadi groups such as al-Qaeda.
  • Failure of Iraqi government to contain sectarian conflicts enabled the rise of IS.

Its current status-

  • IS has lost Tikrit and Fallujah to Iraqi government supported by international forces in April 2015 and June 2016 respectively.
  • Currently the Islamic State has been left with little territory under its control in Iraq.
  • Being Iraq’s second largest city, Mosul is the last significant bastion of IS.

Analysis-

  • Currently a coalition of Iraqi armed forces, the Kurdish Peshmerga, Shia militia groups supported by U.S.-led air strikes and other special forces marched on Mosul for planned military attack.
  • Even though IS is much weakened in comparison to 2014, but capturing of Mosul is not easy for coalition forces.
  • Coalition forces need to dislodge the estimated 5,000 IS fighters, and this military operation is expected to last many weeks.
  • It is expected that a million people may be displaced during the ongoing conflict and it requires international funding to help organise shelter for them.
  • Hence it is necessary that international agencies like UN to look ahead to ease the humanitarian crisis that could follow after the Mosul battle and help Iraq in its reconstruction.

Conclusion-

The ongoing last battle by coalition forces to dislodge the most barbaric terror organisation IS form the city of Mosul may last some time. It is going to be end of Islamic State, but it will create other problems like refugee crisis, sectarian wars. Hence it the responsibility of international community to address these issues, so that such deadly terror groups may not born again.
