Civil services examination is conducted by UPSC in three stages i.e. Prelims, Mains and Interview. Result of every stage is important for the candidates appearing at the examination. After every prelims exam, all candidates who took prelims keenly await for the result. This time becomes crucial for them in view of how to get prepare themselves for the hercules task “The mains”. No doubt, Prelims result identifies the candidates for mains and this identification depends upon the cut off marks. If we look at the cut off marks of last years prelims it seems fluctuating. However, it always does not look like the same. Standard of question papers and technical changes decide a little bit decrease or increase in cut off marks. It must be remembered that when prelims result is announced then cut off marks are not shown immediately. Moreover, marks obtained by the candidate are also not shown. After final selection, UPSC publishes the cut off marks and individual prelims marks. Mains exam is held in Nov. - Dec. It’s result is published in March (probably). Generally, about one third candidates of the total vacancies are called for the interview. Again interview is conducted for 2-3 months. In May or June 1st week, Final result is announced.
