PMO to Review Swachchh Bharat Mission's Performance

After the launch of the much-hyped Swachchh Bharat Mission, the Prime Minister Office is all set to review the performance of the programme across the States in rural areas and has sought an action taken report from the Union Water and Sanitation Ministry in this regard. The Ministry will hold a meeting with the State’s to give details about their role in the Mission. The PMO is keenly watching the performance of the mission launched by the PM last year in October.

  • The PMO has already asked all Central Ministries and Government departments to file a Daily Status Report of what kind of cleanliness work they have done.

  • The Water and Sanitation Ministry and Urban development Ministry are nodal agencies for the mission in the rural and Urban India respectively with an aim to make India clean and open defecation free by 2019.

  • The mission aims to cover 1.04 crore households, provide 2.5 lakh community toilets, 2.6 lakh public toilets, and a solid waste management facility in each town.

  • In the rural areas, emphasis is on to ensure construction of toilets in the villages to prevent people from open defecation.

  • The programme includes elimination of open defecation, conversion of unsanitary toilets to pour flush toilets, eradication of manual scavenging, municipal solid waste management and bringing about a behavioural change in people regarding healthy sanitation practices in urban and rural areas.

  • Of the Centre’s share of Rs.14,623 crore, Rs. 7,366 crore will be spent on solid waste management, Rs. 4,165 crore on household toilets, Rs. 1,828 crore on public awareness and Rs655 crore on community toilets.
