Why in News? 

Union Science & Technology Minister Dr Jitendra Singh announced that Uttarakhand’s real-time weather forecasting capacity will be strengthened with three new radars at Haridwar, Pantnagar, and Auli, complementing the existing installations at Surkanda Devi, Mukteshwar, and Lansdowne. 

  • The announcement was made at the World Summit on Disaster Management, held in Dehradun from 28th to 30th November 2025.

  • About: The World Summit on Disaster Management (WSDM) 2025 serves as a global platform bringing together scientists, policymakers, practitioners, and industry leaders to bridge research, policy, and field-level applications in disaster management. 
  • Objective: The summit aims to strengthen international cooperation, promote multi-stakeholder engagement, and develop innovative and scalable solutions to address global disaster risks and build resilient communities. 
  • Organising Bodies: WSDM 2025 is jointly organised by the Government of Uttarakhand, Uttarakhand Council for Science & Technology (UCOST), and the Himalayan Academy of Science & Technology (HAST). 
  • Key Themes: This year’s overarching theme, “Strengthening International Cooperation for Building Resilient Communities,” aligns with global climate action efforts and international commitments toward safer, sustainable development. 
    • Deliberations focus on knowledge-sharing, resilient community-building, cross-border collaboration, disaster risk reduction, and climate change adaptation, while providing a forum for thought leaders and community representatives to share insights. 

The 5 Es for Disaster Reslience

  • Significance: The event commemorates the anniversary of the Silkyara Tunnel rescue mission—an important milestone in India’s disaster response capacity under the leadership of the Prime Minister. 
    • The summit reinforces Uttarakhand’s growing prominence in disaster resilience and climate action, positioning the state as an important global hub for dialogue, research, and collaborative solutions.
