Why in News?

The Prime Minister Naredra Modi  laid the foundation stone (Bhoomi Poojan) of a new ammonia-urea fertiliser plant at Namrup in Assam.

Key Points

  • Project Significance: The project marks a major boost to industrial growth in Assam and the Northeast, addressing long-standing demands for adequate fertiliser availability and local industrial development. 
  • Strategic Location: The plant is situated at Namrup in Dibrugarh district, Assam, a traditional fertiliser hub with established industrial infrastructure. 
  • Objectives:  Ensure continuous supply of fertilizer, reduce logistics cost, and create direct and indirect employment opportunities. 
  • Investment & Production: Approximately Rs 11,000 crore will be invested in the fertiliser plant.  
  • Annual Production: Over 12 lakh metric tonnes of urea. 
  • Regional Benefit: Assam & neighbouring states like Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, eastern UP. 
  • Urea: A nitrogenous fertiliser containing 46% nitrogen, with the chemical formula CO(NH₂)₂. 
    • Significance: It is essential for vegetative growthleaf development, and chlorophyll formation in crops. 
    •  Its availability plays a crucial role in enhancing crop productivity, ensuring food security, and supporting farmers’ incomes, especially for staple crops like rice, wheat, and maize.
