UP Governor’s Official Residence Renamed ‘Jan Bhavan’ | 24 Jan 2026

Why in News?

The Government of Uttar Pradesh has officially renamed the Governor’s official residence in Lucknow from Raj Bhavan to Jan Bhavan.

Key Points

  • Authority: Renaming was done by the UP government in line with Union Ministry of Home Affairs guidelines on standardising names of Governors’ residences across India.
  • Reason for Name Choice: The name “Lok Bhavan” could not be used because a Lok Bhavan already exists as the Chief Minister’s office.
    •  Hence, “Jan Bhavan” was selected.
  • Objective: Part of a broader initiative to make official nomenclature more public-friendly, fostering people-centric governance symbolism.
  • Significance: Symbolises democracy, accessibility, and the connection between the state and its citizens.
