Why in News? 

The Madhya Pradesh government has launched the Swachh Jal Abhiyan to ensure safe drinking water across the state following a water contamination incident in Indore that raised serious public health concerns. 

Key Points 

  • Campaign Objective: Swachh Jal Abhiyan aims to ensure safe and clean drinking water supplies across the state by identifying and rectifying contamination sources, strengthening monitoring, and improving water infrastructure 
  • Launch: The campaign was launched by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav from Bhopal. 
  • Technology Integration: The initiative includes the use of robotic technology and GIS mapping to inspect underground pipelines, detect leakages, and identify intersections of sewage and potable water lines that pose contamination risks. 
    • Phased Implementation: The drive is structured in phases with intensive water quality checks, cleaning of water treatment plants and storage tanks, and regular testing to ensure compliance with safety standards. 
  • Public Engagement: Under the campaign, the government has introduced mechanisms like ‘Jal Sunwai’ (water grievance hearings) to allow citizens to report water quality issues, which are addressed within prescribed timelines.
