Why in News? 

The 114th edition of the Suwari Festival was recently celebrated in Boko in Assam with vibrant cultural performances and traditional events. 

Key Points 

  • Festival: The Suwari Festival is celebrated in Boko town of Kamrup district in Assam and has been observed for nearly a century by local communities.
    • The festival showcases the rich cultural traditions of various indigenous communities such as Rabha, Bodo, Garo, Gorkha, and Koch-Rajbongshi.  
  • Link with Bihu: It is celebrated on the seventh day of the Rongali Bihu festival, symbolising agricultural prosperity and the arrival of the spring harvesting season. 
  • Major Attractions: Key highlights include traditional events such as the “Hana Ghora” horse dance, “Paro Bah” dance, tug-of-war, bamboo climbing, foot races, and horse races. 
    • Various folk dances are performed during the festival, including Bihu dance, Rabha dances (Farkanti and Bogejari), Bodo dances (Dhwimali and Mawsaglang), and the Garo Wangala dance
