Resurfacing Work Begins on Atal Setu | 10 Nov 2025

Why in News?

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has begun resurfacing and restoration work on Atal Setu after signs of pavement distress were detected on the Navi Mumbai-bound carriageway.

Key Points

  • Atal Setu, officially known as the Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link (MTHL), is a 22 km, six-lane sea bridge connecting Sewri in South Mumbai to Nhava Sheva in Navi Mumbai, inaugurated in January 2024.
  • It is India’s longest and the world’s 12th longest sea bridge, designed to reduce travel time between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai from 2 hours to 20 minutes.

  • The bridge serves as a key corridor for Mumbai’s regional connectivity, linking to the Delhi–Mumbai Industrial Corridor, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), and upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport, thus holding strategic economic significance.
