Why in News? 

The Government of Punjab has launched the Mukhya Mantri Roshan Punjab Yojana to install solar-powered LED streetlights in villages to improve safety, rural infrastructure, and economic activity. 

Key Points 

  • Scheme: The Mukhya Mantri Roshan Punjab Yojana is a rural lighting initiative aimed at installing solar LED streetlights across villages in Punjab to improve security and living conditions. 
  • Approval: The programme was approved by the state cabinet led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. 
  • Coverage: Under the scheme, around 3 lakh solar LED streetlights will be installed across nearly 13,000 villages in the state. 
  • Budget: The project has an estimated financial outlay of about ₹550 crore. 
  • Implementation: The scheme will be implemented by the Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA). 
  • Funding Pattern: The state government will bear about 70% of the cost, while the remaining 30% will be contributed by Gram Panchayats. 
  • Maintenance: The installed lights will have a seven-year maintenance contract. 
  • Objective: The main aim is to enhance rural safety, especially for women, improve night-time mobility, and boost economic activities in villages.
