The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has received the Governance Now 12th PSU National Award in the “Excellence in Innovation” category for its initiative “Dhwani Spandana,” which improves accessibility in public transport for visually impaired passengers.

• About: Dhwani Spandana is an onboard bus identification and navigation system designed to help visually impaired passengers recognise buses and travel independently. 
  • The initiative aims to make public transportation more inclusive by enabling persons with visual disabilities to travel safely without external assistance. 
• Technology-Based Assistance: The system provides audio alerts and guidance, enabling passengers with visual disabilities to identify arriving buses and board the correct vehicle safely. 
  • The technology has been implemented in about 200 city buses in Mysuru, improving accessibility in the public transport network. 
• Collaboration: The initiative was developed with technical support from the German development agency GIZ, which collaborated with KSRTC to introduce assistive technology in buses. 
• Award Recognition: KSRTC received the Governance Now 12th PSU National Award under the “Excellence in Innovation” category for implementing this technology-driven accessibility initiative. 
• Public Sector Innovation: The award highlights the role of technology-driven innovation in public transport and encourages inclusive infrastructure for persons with disabilities.
