The Union Government has set a target of 2029 to end insurgency in Northeast India, with an immediate focus on stabilising the situation in Manipur, which has witnessed recent ethnic violence and security challenges.
Key Points:
- Key Pillars of the 2029 Mission: Intensified action against armed groups using advanced equipment, including mine-protected and bulletproof vehicles already arriving in districts like Ukhrul.
- Peace Process: Accelerating dialogue with insurgent groups to bring them into the mainstream. A tripartite pact was recently signed with Kuki-Zo groups to restore stability.
-
Narco-Terror Crackdown: The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has been tasked with dismantling drug smuggling networks that fund insurgent activities in the region.
-
Development Initiatives: Focusing on infrastructure and economic projects to address the root causes of unrest.
- Strategic Focus on Manipur:Manipur has been identified as the immediate priority for security operations due to its disproportionate share of regional instability.
- Insurgency Statistics: In 2024, Manipur accounted for 77% of all insurgency-related incidents in the Northeast (226 out of 294 cases).
- Force Realignment: Reinforcements, including CRPF’s specialized CoBRA units previously deployed in Left-Wing Extremism (LWE) areas like Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand, will be shifted to the Northeast starting mid-2026.
