PARAM-ISHAN Supercomputer Launched at IIT, Guwahati
Sep 20, 2016

Union Human Resource Development Minister Praksh Javadekar launched PARAM-ISHAN supercomputing facility at IIT, Guwahati on 19 September. It is one of fastest and most powerful computer in north-eastern, eastern and southern regions.

  • PARAM-ISHAN have power of 250 Teraflops and three hundred tera bites capacity and this will not only augment the research initiatives in the Institute, but also help in creating an ecosystem for attracting right talents to the field of research.
  • PARAM-ISHAN can be used in the application areas like Computational Chemistry, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Computational Electromagnetic, Civil Engineering Structures, Nana-block Self Assemble, Optimization etc.
  • North East India receives heavy rainfall during monsoon, which leads to flooding and landslides. PARAM-ISHAN can be used for Weather, climate modeling and seismic data processing.

C-DAC and IIT Guwahati is a strategic move that will provide a boost to both the HPC users and the community through the deployed PARAM-ISHAN and several technology areas will be positively affected through the introduction of the new Supercomputer.

  • Several technology areas will be positively affected through the introduction of the new supercomputer,
  • Several institutions in the country will get supercomputers in the near future to boost innovation and research.
  • Some institutions already have supercomputers, the number of such institutes will rise and go up to 60 as the government is focussing on providing advanced infrastructure.
  • The supercomputer would not only augment research initiatives in the institute, but also help create an ecosystem for attracting the right talent to the field of research.

The Government also invited for new developmental and research initiatives and two thousand proposals were received. Out of these projects four hundred were shortlisted and funds released for the various projects across the county.

What is Supercomputer?

A supercomputer is a computer that performs at or near the currently highest operational rate for computers.  Traditionally, supercomputers have been used for scientific and engineering applications that must handle very large databases or do a great amount of computation or both.

A supercomputer is a computer with a high-level computational capacity compared to a general-purpose computer. Performance of a supercomputer is measured in floating-point operations per second (FLOPS)  instead of million instructions per second (MIPS).

  • As of June 2016, the fastest supercomputer in the world was the Sunway TaihuLight, in the city of Wixu in China.

A few statistics on TaihuLight:

  • 40,960 64-bit, RISC processors with 260 cores each.
  • Peak performance of 125 petaflops (quadrillion floating point operations per second).
  • 32GB DDR3 memory per compute node, 1.3 PB memory in total.
  • Linux-based Sunway Raise operating system (OS).
