New Governors in 6 States

The government named new governors for Jharkhand and five north-eastern states.

1. Droupadi Murmu (Odisha BJP leader) as the Governor of Jharkhand.

2. J.P. Rajkhowa as the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh.

3. Tathagata Roy as the Governor of Tripura.

4. V. Shanmuganthan as the Governor of Meghalaya.

5. Dr. Syed Ahmed, Governor of Jharkhand is transferred and appointed as Governor of Manipur for the remainder of his term.

6. Lt. General (Retd.) Nirbhay Sharma, Governor of Arunachal Pradesh is transferred and appointed as Governor of Mizoram for the remainder of his term.

7th Governor in Mizoran in a Year: Mizoram, incidentally, has seen the appointment of seven governors since the new government came to power.

  • The frequent changes in Mizoram governorship began in July 2014, when V. Purushothaman resigned after being transferred to neighbouring Nagaland.

  • The next in office was Kamla Beniwal, who was earlier the Governor of Gujarat. With just four months left in her term, the government transferred her from Gujarat to Mizoram. But days after she took charge in August 2014, she was sacked on the allegations of gross impropriety, including misuse of state machinery.

  • Maharashtra Governor K. Sankaranarayanan was appointed in her place, but he resigned, refusing take up the assignment.

  • Over the next few months, former bureaucrat V.K. Duggal and former Delhi Police Commissioner K.K. Paul held additional charge of Mizoram.

  • In December 2014, Uttarakhand Governor Aziz Qureshi was transferred to Mizoram, but in March 2015, he too, was sacked. HE dragged the government to court over the issue.

  • Till now, West Bengal Governor Keshri Nath Tripathi was holding the additional charge of Mizoram.
