65th North Eastern Council Plenary Meeting

The two-day 65th Plenary meeting of North Eastern Council (NEC) was held in Shillong, Meghalaya on 26-27 May.  On the first day of the meeting, two technical sessions on the topics of ‘Livelihood’ and ‘Entrepreneurship’ was held. 

Different Central ministries interacted on the development projects in North East region. Ministries and departments including Agriculture, Rural Development, Food Processing, Textiles, North Eastern Space Applications Centre (NESAC), Communication & IT, Skills, Tribal Affairs, AYUSH, MSME, Commerce and Department of Financial Services participated in the interaction during the two technical sessions. 

  • The first Plenary Session included tabling of Action Taken Report on the 64th Plenary meeting and approval of Draft Annual Plan of NEC, 2016-17 by the Council. 

  • Other topics discussed were North East: Organic capital of the country, North Eastern Road Sector Development Scheme, Assistance for procurement of agriculture and horticulture produces including medicinal plants, Extension of runway at Umroi Airport, Shillong etc. 

  • During the second Plenary Session, discussion were held on issues such as infrastructure and connectivity and the Ministries such as Road Transport & Highways, Railways, Civil Aviation, Power, Tourism and Human Resource Development are participating. 

  • During the third Plenary Session, various ministries and departments including Ministry of Home Affairs, Inland Waterways Authority of India, Health & Family Welfare, External Affairs and Drinking Water & Sanitation participated in the discussions. 

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi also addressed the 65th plenary session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) meeting in Shillong on May 27.

  • He released a special cover and a stamp brought out by the Department of Posts to mark the occasion.

  • In the summit PM said, North-east can be the basket of organic food for everyone. If we force development on organic farming it would help the N-E region greatly.

The North Eastern Council is the nodal agency of the Ministry of Development for North Eastern Region that comprises of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura.

It was constituted in 1971 which marked the beginning of a new chapter of concerted and planned endeavour for the rapid development of the Region.
