PM Launches 'Setu Bhartam' Project

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a Rs.50,800-crore programme called Setu Bharatam to build overpasses on national highways to improve road safety. The project, which will do away with railway crossings on national highways by 2019, is intended to prevent accidents and make travel safer.

  • Under the Setu Bharatam project, a total of 208 railway crossings will be replaced by rail overbridges (ROBs) by 2019 at an estimated cost of Rs.20,800 Crore.

  • Similarly, Rs.30,000 Crore would be spent to overhaul 1,500 bridges of the British era that are old and worn out.

  • Detailed project reports have already been received for 73 ROBs and of these 64 ROBs with an estimated cost of Rs.5,600 crore are likely to be sanctioned by the end of this fiscal year.

The 208 railway overbridges/underbridges to be built at a cost of Rs.20,800 crore include 33 in Andhra Pradesh, 12 in Assam, 20 in Bihar, five in Chhattisgarh, eight in Gujarat, 10 in Haryana, five in Himachal Pradesh, 11 in Jharkhand, 17 in Karnataka, four in Kerala, six in Madhya Pradesh, 12 in Maharashtra, four of Odisha, 10 in Punjab, nine in Rajasthan, nine in Tamil Nadu, two in Uttarakhand, nine in Uttar Pradesh and 22 in West Bengal.
