Oct 01, 2016 Related to : GS Paper-2

Ans :

Recently committee headed by retired justice Lodha has filed status report notifying the developments with regard to administrative reforms in cricket as per its recommendations. Earlier the Supreme Court had validated virtually all the recommendations of Lodha committee that mandated radical changes in the BCCI’s governance and management.

Key points of status report-

  • According to report, reforms in Indian cricket were not possible unless the present crop of BCCI office bearers stepped down. The BCCI placed impediments to the implementation of its recommendations.
  • The committee found violations in several decisions taken at the annual general meeting of BCCI, for example appointment of several office bearers.
  • The committee blamed BCCI for minutes of the meeting were not handed over to the committee.
  • To implement various administrative reforms it was suggested earlier, now Lodha committee recommended to remove all the office bearers of BCCI.

  • The Lodha Committee’s status report highlighted how the Board of Control for Cricket in India has failed to adopt the recommended administrative reforms by impeding various ways.
  • As office bearers of BCCI are placing impediments in bringing administrative reforms, hence they have to relinquish their posts for the proposed changes to be effected.
  • Various recent actions of BCCI are seen as failure to heed the Supreme Court order. Particularly various decisions BCCI has been made in its annual general meeting has provoked both Lodha committee as well as apex court.
  • BCCI has defied orders of apex court and went on appointing officers various office bearers as per its whims and fancies.
  • BCCI management committee have to fall in line as per recommendations of Lodha committee or else Supreme Court must make them fall in line.

In recent time BCCI has been in news for all bad reasons. Currently BCCI is suffering from corruption, favouritism and nepotism. To contain all such activities Lodha committee has suggested various administrative reforms and apex court has fixed the timeline to implement those recommendations. Though BCCI has agreed to implement, but various recent actions are looks contradictory. Hence Supreme Court must fix these problems and bring overhaul reforms in BCCI.
