Introduction-

America’s newly elected President Donald Trump throughout in his election campaign carried anti-China rhetoric. With the news of the seizure of an American underwater drone in the international waters of the South China Sea by the Chinese Navy marks the latest flashpoint in bilateral relations that have entered uncharted territory. 

Issues between President Elect of America and China-

  • The most recent flash-point between both countries is the seizure of an American underwater drone in the international waters of the South China Sea by the Chinese Navy.
  • Earlier Donald Trump broke diplomatic protocol and accepted a congratulatory call from Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen, a move that invited an angry response from China, which sees Taiwan as a breakaway province.
  • Even in election rallies Donald Trump questioned the One-China policy, and accused China for currency manipulation. He promised that he would renegotiate the terms of America’s engagement with China.

Analysis-

  • So the issues is, Donald Trump’s attacks on China and questions over the One-China policy just a continuation of his campaign rhetoric, or part of a well-thought-out policy to establish a new normal in ties.•
  • According to some observers, Donald Trump wants concessions from China over key issues such as trade, South China Sea disputes and the North Korea nuclear crisis, and that by raising the sensitive Taiwan issue, he is trying to gain some bargaining leverage over China.
  • If it is planned strategy, then China will find it politically difficult to ignore Mr. Trump’s apparent effort to change the rules of the game.
  • In geopolitical context is possibly even more important, as China doesn’t want other powers to dictate or change the rules of engagement on its seafront.
  • The ongoing tussle between new government of America and China are to some extent could risk the progress the America and China have painstakingly made in bilateral ties over four decades.

Conclusion-

Since election campaign to till now President elect of USA, Donald Trump has raised objections and questioned on various matters of China. The tussle is escalating day by day, as he recently blamed Chinese for theft of USA drone. Donald Trump’s strategy on China, many consider it as well planned move to improve its bargaining ability. In this background China cannot ignore him and it may create risks between relations of both countries.
